What is KGS?

Who is the ALA?

Kentucky Girls State is an annual program funded and run by the American Legion Auxiliary (ALA) designed for rising seniors in high school to learn about and become more involved in the democratic process. For a week each summer, girls from all around Kentucky gather to debate bills, elect state officials, and participate in small city gatherings as well as large party conventions, all while making new friends and learning the importance of democracy. At the end of the week, two girls are elected to attend Girls Nation in Washington, D.C., to participate in a week long program to represent Kentucky Girls State as senators alongside girls from all 50 Girls State programs.

The vision of the American Legion Auxiliary is to support The American Legion while becoming the premier service organization and foundation of every community providing support for our veterans, our military, and their families by shaping a positive future in an atmosphere of fellowship, patriotism, peace and security.

Criteria for Delegates

​

Progression through 11th grade without interruption or retention. 

​

Interest in government and politics. 

​

Demonstration of leadership characteristics. 

​

Must be a legal resident of the United States.

 

All Girls State attendees are sponsored by Units of the American Legion Auxiliary.  Local Units welcome contributing sponsors to assist in financing the financial aspect of the program.

The 77th session of ALA Kentucky Girls State will be 

 

June 3rd - 7th, 2024.

The application deadline is May 15th.
